Round 16 v NeoCats

Wearing Black Armbands:

This week, Rosso Nero FC wore black armbands alongside our Major Sponsor, NTC, to pay our respects following the tragic loss of a best mate’s father. Rest in peace, Vincenzo Catina our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time.

Pre-Game Drama: Down to the Wire

After confirming a solid 6-man lineup early in the week, disaster struck just one hour before kickoff. A late message came through from Amir, unwell and unable to play. A frantic ring-around ensued, but on short notice, no cover could be found.

That meant we took to the pitch with just 5 players and zero substitutes, facing a fresh, young, and fit NeoCats side coming off a bye week. Despite the odds stacked against us, the pre-game belief was strong: we knew we had enough quality on the park to come home with the chocolates.

First Half: A Chaotic Shootout

We started on the front foot, pressing hard from the whistle, but couldn’t turn our early chances into goals. NeoCats soon settled into their rhythm, controlling tempo and pushing forward.

0–1: NeoCats’ first meaningful attack won them a corner. The resulting cross was met with a first-time strike; CJ scrambled to cover, but a deflection off Joel sent the ball agonizingly through CJ’s legs and into the net.

1–1: No panic. We responded instantly as Dan set up Adem, who finished neatly to get us back on terms!

1–3: NeoCats dominated the next five minutes. Two long-range strikes snuck through a sea of legs, leaving a blinded CJ stranded as both found the back of the net.

2–3: Ball control restored! A strong spell of forward pressure saw Adem strike again, finding the bottom corner with another clinical finish.

2–4: NeoCats hit back too easily through the middle, leaving CJ shaking his head at a defense that normally doesn't leak cheap goals.

3–4: Dan stepped up, unleashing a low left-foot rocket to bring us right back into striking distance.

3–6: Tiring legs began to show as we failed to track runners, allowing back-to-back 3v2 counter-attacks that NeoCats' spare attackers slotted home before the break.

Half-Time Score: 3 – 6

The message at half-time was clear and simple: block the long-range efforts and track the runners on 1-2 passes. We created plenty of chances in that first half - if we tightened up at the back, we were still well in this fight.

Second Half: The Fightback

4–6: Straight from the second-half kickoff, Christian finished off a neat opportunity to spark the comeback!

5–6: High pressure right off the restart forced a turnover. Dan drove down the wing and whipped a cross to the back post, where Joel made a brilliant late run to tap it home. Game on!

NeoCats woke up and used their fresh legs to launch rapid 3-man attacks. CJ made save after save to keep us alive, but the pressure eventually told. 5-7

With 5 minutes left, after absorbing relentless pressure on a corner, CJ quickly released Dan on the counter. Dan drove forward and buried his shot! 6-7

Smelling a unbelievable comeback, we poured forward, but missed chances cost us. A quick throw caught us exposed, leaving NeoCats 1v1 with CJ, where their striker cleverly flicked it over CJ’s outstretched hand. 6-8

Refusing to throw in the towel, we dug deep, pushed forward, and scored again with just 2 minutes remaining! 7-8

Pushing all-out for a dramatic equaliser left space behind our exhausted defense. A long ball over the top allowed their striker to head it past an advancing CJ. 7-9

In the final 30 seconds, a chaotic sequence - a save, a shot off the post, and a tired clearance effort - ended with a dummy and a goal, summing up a night where our legs simply ran out.

Final Score: 10 – 7 Loss. Our 2nd loss for the season.

The Verdict

A classic, high-scoring shootout! While Rosso Nero FC didn't come away with the points this week, the squad showed incredible spirit, grit, and fight to stay in the contest without a single bench rotation. Ultimately, we just didn't have the legs to run out the game against a full-strength side.

Match Highlights: Catch all the action on our YouTube and Instagram channels.

Next Up: Ravioli, coming off a draw with Lallana. We dust ourselves off and go again.

Remaining in top spot 7 points clear of 2nd.

See you all next week!
